Both main Australian political parties are racing to introduce their own bills protecting journalist’s confidential sources.
Independents Andrew Wilkie and Nick Xenophon’s proposal is today said to be supported by the Coalition, and is based on New Zealand laws. The bill would place the onus on the party looking to reveal to the confidential source of a media story to persuade the relevant judge that the disclosure is in the public’s interest.
It is intended that the bill would help raise the quality of journalism in Australia.
