What were the fears/concerns starting a new firm?
“Everything! Starting your own business, whatever it is, is daunting.”More specifically, I came from medium and larger firms so I’m used to being heavily reliant on administrative support. Would I be able to manage running a business, complete all the administration while maintaining a level of billable work output that would see the business be profitable; could I manage the admin and the chargeable workload simultaneously. Getting internal processes bedded down and having a workable, reliable DMS and PMS is key to ensuring the chargeable v. non chargeable balance is correct.
I was mainly concerned that I might not be able to get enough clients, and that the business aspect of running a law firm would be too cumbersome.
Did those fears concerns come to pass? If so why and how could they be avoided and if not what were the contributing factors?
“It did not take long until I was at full capacity with clients, and the business aspect of running a law firm has been easier (and mostly more enjoyable!) than expected.”Starting with a new operating system is always daunting but, FilePro is intuitive and user-friendly, so I was able to set the business up properly from the outset.
How would you rate your experience with FilePro in assisting in the transition?
“FilePro has been one of, if not the, best with ongoing client services and support.”
I was expecting a lot more challenges than I have experienced. Having a solid grounding in place has meant I have one less thing to worry about. I have worked with a few other software providers in my time and, I have to say, FilePro has been one of, if not the, best with ongoing client services and support. Implementation was easy to manage and well-guided.
What surprised you the most since your firm has launched?
“How easily things have fallen into place.”
Of course, there have been hurdles along the way and a few tweeks still need to made. But generally speaking, I was expecting a lot more challenges than I have experienced. Having a solid grounding such as FilePro in place has meant I have one less thing to worry about.
What advice would you give to others looking to start their own firm knowing what you now know?
“I wish I had engaged FilePro when I initially started.”

Listen and surround yourself with the right people.
Ask lots of questions from anyone who has been there before you and/or is willing to give you advice, but also trust your gut at the end of the day.
